PARTICIPATORY MANAGEMENT AND TEACHERS’ COMMITMENT TO WORK IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examined the relationship between participatory management and teachers’ commitment to work in public secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined the relationship between teachers’ participation in decision-making, participation in school planning, participation in policy implementation and their commitment to work. The study adopted a correlational research design. The population comprised teachers in public secondary schools in Rivers State, while a sample of 380 teachers was selected through a multistage sampling procedure. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled Participatory Management and Teachers’ Commitment Questionnaire (PMTCQ). Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicated positive relationships between teachers’ participation in decisionmaking, school planning and policy implementation and their commitment to work. The study concluded that participatory management is associated with teachers’ commitment to work in public secondary schools. It was recommended that school principals should provide appropriate opportunities for teachers to contribute to school decisions, planning activities and policy implementation
