Abstract

The study evaluates five housing estates in Kubwa, Federal Capital Territory Abuja, using Housing Quality Indicators. In achieving its aim, the study assessed the problems of housing quality in the study areas and examined the government and housing agency interventions in the improvement of the qualities of those housing estates. Literatures were reviewed around estates and housing quality indicators. The research design used in this dissertation is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire instruments to obtain information from the respondents. A total of 150 respondents were selected for this study. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple statistical tools. The study found that government did not specify standard building features. It was also found that on the scale of housing quality indicators, some of the estates were performing better than the others. Other findings include the failure of the architectural design to cater for adequate space needs, proper ventilation, cultural characteristics and environmental sanitation. The study concludes that there is a need for all architectural designs of housing estates in Kubwa to provide for proper ventilation and space needs of the occupants. It is recommended that the profiling should include statistical analysis of the household size, housing prices, land supply, housing loan with subsidized interest rate.
