CAREER CHOICE AND STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE OF SUBJECT COMBINATION IN UYO METROPOLIS
Abstract
The study investigated career choice and students’ knowledge of subject combination in Uyo metropolis. Three purposes of the study, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at .05 level of significance. A descriptive research design was adopted while the population of the study comprised all the 2,085 senior secondary Two (SS2) students in the Eight (8) public secondary schools in Uyo urban. A sample size of 200 Senior Secondary Two (SS2) students which represent 10 percent of the study population was used for the study. To get adequate sampled schools, random sampling method was used to select 5 public secondary schools out of 8, while 40 students were selected from each of the sampled schools using hat and draw method of random sampling. The researcher developed and validated instrument titled “Career Choice and Students Knowledge of Subject Combination Questionnaire (CCSKSCQ) were used for data collection. Mean and Standard Deviation was used in answering the research questions while Independent t-test was used to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study showed a significant difference in students’ knowledge of subject combination based on their choice of mathematics and science-related career, humanities or art-related as well as commercial-related career. Conclusion was drawn from the findings while the researcher recommended among others things that, career bulletin boards should be provided in all schools where information about different career can be displayed for the students
